Sample Statement (150 words)
My experiences in academia are contextualised by my identity as a cis-gendered female. The alienating gender divide that I became aware of in school persisted through college. It often feels as though I am fighting for my place at the table in this environment, where my accomplishments are eclipsed by my identity. Leading an all-woman delegation to the iGEM conference in Boston brought in a new perspective. I was empowered to address my insecurities and challenge the status quo. It served as inspiration to set up a student-run women’s forum to function as a rallying point for gender and sexual minorities to build a more inclusive community. In college, I have also been involved with formally establishing the first LGBTQIA+ alliance. Deeply aware of the privileges that have shaped my experiences, I am committed to making science more accessible and dedicated to working for greater inclusivity alongside my research.
